GREETINGS
In this chapter we will learn to greet others. Depending on the time it will learn to say "good days", "good afternoon" or "good night". Similarly we will learn to say goodbye to a person already present when a person does not know it. Alongside each expression you'll find the pronunciation.
For greetings, we usally have two informal forms:
1- Hello or Hi (jelou o jai), cuando queremos decir Hola
2- How are you (jau ar iu), significa como estás

For greeting people based on the hour, exist three basic forms:
1- Good Morning (gud mornin): Buenos Días
2- Good Afternoon (gud afternun): Buenas Tardes
3- Good Evening (gud ifnin): Buenas Noches

To say goodbye usually we use ths forms:
1-Good Bye (gud bai): Adios
2- See you later (si yu leirer): Nos vemos luego
3- See you soon (si yu sun): Nos vemos pronto
4- Have a nice day (jav a nais dei): Que tengas un buen dia
5- Have a great time (jav a greit taim): Que te vaya bien

If we do not know a person, these are expressions that are used when we are going to meet that person:
1- What's your name (uats yur neim): Cual es tu nombre o como te llamas
2- My name is Terry (mai neim is terri): Mi nombre es Terry o me llamo Terry
3- This is my teacher, Sam (dis is mai ticher, sam): Este es mi profesor, Sam
4- Nice to meet you (nais tu mit iu): Un placer conocerte (conocerlo)

ENGLISH IV (UNIT V) PRESENTATION

(Done by Benjamin and Alfonso)

Unit V expressing preferences

EXPRESSING PREFERENCE

PREFER: + Noun +TO + Noun : I prefer coffee to tea
+ -ING Form + TO + ING Form : I prefer skiing to swimming. = to talk about general preferences
+ TO Infinitive + RATHER THAN + Bare Infinitive : I prefer to eat fish rather than (eat) meat to talk about general preferences

WOULD PREFER + TO Infinitive : Would you like to have a cup of coffee? I’d prefer to have some water. = To talk about specific preference
♪ Another clause can be introduced by rather than + bare infinitive : He’d prefer to stay at home rather than drive
to the restaurant
♪ Prefer takes an object when we want to introduce a new subject: I would prefer her to stay at home

WOULD RATHER/SOONER

SAME SUBJECT : followed by the bare infinitive: I'd rather play football than golf but I prefer football to golf
Or the Perfect Infinitive: I'd rather have stayed at home

DIFFERENT SUBJECT: → Use a Past Tense with present or future meaning: Shall I open the window? I'd rather you didn't
→ Use a Past Perfect with past meaning: I'd rather you hadn't called him old

HAD BETTER + Bare Infinitive (= should/ought)
You had/'d better book your flight early I'd better not take out a loan; I won't be able to pay it back

This structure is used to give advice or to say what the best thing to do in a particular situation is. Had better is more emphatic than Should or Ought to but it is not as emphatic as Must

You must see a lawyer . (strong advice) You had better see a lawyer ( less emphatic than "Must")
You should/ought to see a lawyer ( even less emphatic)
